Station Adoption

Since January 2017, the nursey has been responsible for tending the flower beds at Poppleton Station under the overall auspices of Northern Trains’ Community and Sustainability Manager.  It is very desirable that the station is properly maintained for the benefit of both the local population and visitors, particularly as the latter may be visiting Poppleton for the first time.

The work is undertaken by a small team of nursery volunteers who meet weekly throughout the year.  Activities include regular planting, watering and tidying the flower beds and planters on both platforms.  New displays are provided each spring and autumn to keep the station looking attractive and colourful.  Plants are sourced from the nursery using funds provided by Northern Trains.

Other activities include keeping a watching brief on the station generally, promptly reporting to Northern Trains problems such as non-working lights or faults with the electronic train departure displays.  Summary timetable information is displayed to augment that provided by Northern.  From time to time the concrete planters and concrete POPPLETON station letters are given a fresh coat of white paint.

The team has created displays on each platform to show the history of the station and how, in times past, it was part of a much more extensive rail network in this area of Yorkshire.

If you would like to join the team (or become involved with any aspect of the nursery’s many activities) please contact the nursery in the first instance to arrange a visit.  You will be very welcome!

A brief history of the station can be found here.
